Art therapy is a very effective first experience for children to begin counseling. It allows children to be in a familiar environment with art making and lessens the discomfort and stigma that can be felt by young people when thinking about starting counseling.
Marie Mauro, LPC has extensive experience in combining Expressive Arts Therapy and Brainspotting as a Therapeutic Approach for Individual Counseling Sessions
Expressive Arts Therapy and Brainspotting are both therapeutic approaches that can help people process trauma. Expressive arts therapy allows people to express their emotions through art and imagery, while brainspotting uses eye movements to help people access and process memories. Combining these approaches can help people explore and process deep emotions and trauma.
Expressive Arts TherapyAllows people to express their emotions and experiences visually Can help people improve their sense of safety and relieve traumatic stress Can include movement, sound, music, visual art, imagery, enactment, drama, storytelling, play, and creative writing
BrainspottingUses eye positions to help people access and process traumatic memories and emotions Based on the principle that "where you look affects how you feel" Can help people reprocess memories and emotions that traditional talk therapy may not reach Combining expressive arts therapy and brainspotting can help people access and process deeper emotions and memories that may be difficult to articulate verbally and can provide a non-verbal and therapeutic way to explore and process trauma
