CBT-I Sessions To Treat Insomnia
Cognitive Behavioral Therapy for Insomnia (CBT-I) is a specialized form of Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) for treating insomnia without or with sleep medication. Insomnia is a common problem involving trouble falling asleep, staying asleep, or getting quality sleep. CBT-I aims to improve sleep habits and behavior by identifying and changing the thoughts and the behaviors that affect the ability of a person to sleep or sleep well. The goal is to get to 95% sleep efficiency, that is to say, that 95% of the time we are available for sleep, we actually sleep.
CBT-I is recommended nationwide as a first line treatment for insomnia once physical concerns have been addressed such as sleep apnea. The program even works with CPAP or BIPAP patients. Insomnia, or sleeplessness, is typically followed by daytime sleepiness, low energy, irritability, and depressed mood. CBT-I is a rigorous 8 week program that includes Stimulus Control combined with sleep restriction. The criteria for treatment is taking 30 minutes or more to fall asleep, 3 or more nights per week, and having these issues for 30 or more days.
